Free Pattern: Crochet Friendship Bracelets

Our summer issue is full of surprises. Did you spot all the Bird of Paradise flowers poking their heads into shots? Such divas! We also noticed that we have an abundance of pineapples in this issue  - we're a teeeeeny bit obsessed. Okay, we know it's a trend, but how could we resist when they're so graphic and just remind us of a delicious, juicy summer?

Summer isn't always a time when you want a big sweater piled in your lap while you finish the last sleeve. So we thought it would be excellent to whip up some little bracelets from scrap yarn and trade 'em with buds, like you might at summer camp. In addition to the pineapple cuff with the 70s macrame vibe, we've also got a much simpler zig zag bracelet that works up in no time.

So grab your nearest skinny scraps - perhaps in a summery cotton or linen? - and get making!

Zig Zag Friendship Bracelet

We used both laceweight and 4-ply/sock yarns for our bracelets. Use whatever scraps you’ve got! Use a 3 mm / D hook, or whatever hook gives you a nice solid, but not too stiff bracelet.

Instructions:

Leaving a tail from your slip knot of at least 15 cm / 6”,  ch 4.

Row 1: In 4th ch from hook, [dc 1, ch 2, dc 2, ch 3], turn.

Row 2: [Dc  2, ch 2, dc 2, ch 3] in ch 2 space, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until bracelet is 14 cm / 5 1/2” long. Break yarn, leaving a tail of at least 15 cm / 6”.

Soak bracelets and let dry flat, pinning if needed to keep them from curling. Tie around  your (or your bestie’s) wrist, and wear with pride!

Pineapple Crush Friendship Bracelet

This one is more like a cuff, so we recommend a 4-ply/sock yarn and a 3.5 mm / E hook.

Instructions (see illustrations below for extra guidance):

Leaving a tail from your slip knot of at least 15 cm /  6”, ch 13.

Sc 1 in 7th st from hook, ch 6, sc 1 in furthest ch from hook, ch 7, turn. [fig.1]

[(Dc 1, ch 1) 9 times, dc 1] in 6-ch loop farthest from hook. Ch 7 and sl st into furthest st from hook, turn. [fig.2]

Sc 10 into 7-ch sp, [(sc 1,ch 3, sc 1) into next ch sp} 4 times, sc into next ch sp. [fig.3]

Your first pineapple is not quite done, but now you will begin to work on pineapple number 2!

*Ch 13, sc 1 in 7th st from hook, ch 6, sc in ch 1 sp from the first pineapple, ch 7, turn. [fig.4]

[(Dc 1, ch 1) 9 times, dc 1] in 6-ch loop farthest from hook. Ch 7 and sl st into sc at the bottom of this new pineapple, turn.

Sc 10 into 7-ch sp, [(sc 1,ch 3, sc 1) into next ch sp] 4 times, sc into next ch sp. [fig.5]

Repeat from * once, or until desired length of bracelet.

**Now continue around the top of your final pineapple as follows: [ch 3, sc] into same ch 1 sp as previous sc. [(Sc 1,ch 3, sc 1) into next ch sp] 4 more times. Sc 10 in following 7-ch sp. [fig.6]

Continuing on to pineapple below,  [(sc 1,ch 3, sc 1) into next ch sp] 4 times, sc 10 in following 7-ch sp.

Repeat from ** once more (or however many times necessary to complete each pineapple).

Break yarn and weave in this end only. Attach a length of yarn at the other end of bracelet securely. Soak bracelet and let dry, pinning if necessary to keep it from twisting. Tie it on and flaunt your pineapples!
