Our Story

Pom Pom was founded in 2012 as a quarterly that presents knitting, crochet, and craft in the modern, beautiful, and meaningful way we’ve always known it should be. Mainly conceived as a collection of patterns complemented by thoughtful writing and useful tutorials, we also celebrate the joy of making, hopefully without taking ourselves too seriously!

Since our kitchen table beginnings, we’ve gone on to feature some of the most well-known and loved independent designers and yarn producers, with some of the less well-known also growing along with us. We are so proud and lucky to be able to say that Pom Pom Quarterly is now stocked at over 700 locally-owned yarn shops and book stores across four continents and 20 countries.

At Pom Pom we know that knitters are creative, curious people – so we also include lots of other features we think you’ll enjoy – from cocktail recipes, to dyeing tutorials, to articles about 18th century paper cut artists! Basically anything we think will inspire you. We also take pride in every detail of our magazine, from the typefaces we use right down to the paper we’re printed on – knitters are tactile people after all! We have always been, and continue to be, printed in the United Kingdom.

Pom Pom continues to grow, and we very much value each and every one of you along with us on the journey! We are so excited about bringing you more thoughtful, beautiful, joyful, educational, and inspirational knitted (and crocheted!) goodness for a long time to come.

Our team

Lydia Gluck (She/her/hers) ― Co-Founder & Creative Director
Lydia was born in London, grew up in Wales, studied in Manchester, and left her heart in Mexico. She has always had a crafty streak, dabbling in everything from woodwork to paper mâché. Lydia has a background in linguistics, and loves trying to draw parallels between knitting and grammar. When she is not knitting she can be found doing karaoke, sewing, or wild swimming.

Meghan Fernandes (She/her/hers) ― Co-Founder & Creative Director
Meghan is a former American transplant to London, where she lived for a decade. While in London she wrote her MA dissertation on knitting in 20th century women's literature and worked for a publisher, a gallery, and a knitting shop, leaving her with a random but particular set of skills that could really only lead to running a knitting magazine. She is now based in Austin, Texas, where she lives with her husband and two young daughters. She revels in the challenge of making and enjoying knitwear for a hot climate.

Amy Collins (She/her/hers) ― Managing Editor
Amy studied Fine Art in Manchester before returning to her home town of Farnham, where she put her creative skills to use as a craft event organiser. She joined Pom Pom in 2014 to continue her knitting adventure. Besides knitting almost exclusively jumpers she enjoys long walks, watching football, and one of these days will fulfill her annual New Year resolution of learning to crochet.

Belinda Johnson (She/her/hers) ― Publisher & Marketing Director
From South London via South Wales, Belinda has worked in arts and publishing for over 10 years, and joined Pom Pom in 2020. Favouring punk aesthetics over technique, Belinda made questionable knitting choices as a teenager, but after a long hiatus she’s recently picked up the needles again as… well… it’s pretty unavoidable! She also has a side hustle in radio and podcasting, an uncanny ability to retain useless music trivia, and supports Liverpool Football Club.

Sophie Heathscott (She/her/hers) ― Wholesale Manager & Community Liaison
Sophie learnt to knit when she was knee-high to a sheep, and after moving to London to study Design at Goldsmiths, she fully wove herself into the knitting world. Plying her trade surrounded by skeins while working at a yarn shop and teaching beginners their first stitches, she then joined the team at Pom Pom in 2016. Managing the wholesale accounts, she enjoys connecting with stockists and LYSs all over the world, and maybe one day she’ll visit them all. You’ll also see her at knitting events where she loves meeting and making Pom pals, chatting projects on the Ravelry forums or producing and co-hosting the Pomcast.

Sophie can often be found baking and pottering in her tiny garden, all while working on perfect puns for every occasion and never too far away from her next crafty project.

Francesca Baldry (She/her/hers) ― Features Editor & US Wholesale Manager
Francesca joined Pom Pom with an extensive professional background in art and a love of words. Her Jessica Fletcher-esque, Maritimer grandmother taught her to knit and the spark was rekindled in 2010, when Francesca relocated to London for work and first encountered knitters creating quality, contemporary garments that celebrated plus-sized bodies. Coming from a dispersed family of migrants, Francesca has worked in Japan, Italy, America, Canada, and England, and speaks 4 languages very badly.

Gayle Taliaferro (She/her/hers) ― US Studio Manager
Gayle grew up in Austin, Texas then spent 15 years in Denver, Chicago and New York before returning to Austin 6 years ago with her husband/best friend and 2 cats. Her knitting journey began almost a decade ago, but it wasn’t until working for Pom Pom that she ventured into the incredibly fulfilling work of making garments that could be worn and treasured forever! She has been in charge of lovingly wrapping shipments to US shops and customers, as well as managing the US studio, for the last 5 years. Gayle has a background in graphic design and has dedicated her life to various careers supporting the arts and artists of all mediums. She loves studying the human experience, botany and pop culture and is passionate about normalising conversations surrounding mental health and human rights. You can find her gazing at the stars at night, playing piano and taking an inordinate number of pictures she’ll never post of all the beautiful little things in nature that surround us.

Anoushka Haroutounian (She/her/hers) ― Retail & UK Studio Manager
Noush is Pom Pom’s retail and London studio manager, where her love for organisation is in full flex! She fell in love with knitting when she studied textile design at Chelsea College of Arts and that’s where she also discovered machine knitting, which she uses to knit lots of colourful pieces. Noush’s family is Armenian! And she lives with her two best friends in south London- her most favourite place. When she’s not running a tight ship at Pom Pom HQ, you can find her cycling around, practising yoga or at the pub!
