Free Pattern: Vireo Mitts
Here at Pom Pom we’re ones for extolling the virtues of the fingerless mitt; a versatile accessory to compliment those in-between days, and for channeling some Dickensian-chic while at the computer of your chilly home office. Not to mention your fingers are free (just like this pattern!) for picking flowers, clicking a snappy beat or more often that not, using your phone with zero chance of drafts.
Written by Pom Pom co-editor and founder Meghan Fernandes, these mitts showcase what Meghan does best with her designs. Featuring intuitive details with an elegant finish, the pattern has an easy to memorise flow with the chunky cables working up quickly to make a satisfying stack of stitches.
Vireo refers to the latin name for a family of birds, typically green in colour (hence the latin virere, “to be green”). Though many of us are currently experiencing those outdoor spaces we love in a very different way, we hope these comforting stitches will be your steps to let your mind travel to thoughts of green spaces and loved ones. Perhaps these could even be a project you gift to someone special next time you are able to see them? A lovely thought to tide us over.
For the mitts you see here we’ve used a skein of velvety soft John Arbon Textiles Viola, a plied merino in a palette of heathery hues. These mitts are the perfect reason to stash dive and give a luxury skein you’ve been saving a chance to shine. Look for a plump yarn that’s not too fluffy so you can ensure good stitch definition and to help those cables pop!
