Desaturated paintings, vintage tiles, and lovingly worn textiles are the inspiration behind Pom Pom’s first ever line of yarn, Garland, in collaboration with Hobbii Yarn. We wanted to develop a yarn that is unique and versatile, and calls to mind the fun, colourful vibe we have come to be known for.
Garland’s blend of cotton and alpaca is warm (but not too warm) and alpaca is a lovely alternative for people who love the fuzz of mohair but can’t tolerate it. The yarn is super soft and has a gorgeous halo, but also has lovely definition for textured stitches. And, because the cotton fibres do not take the dye, the yarn has an incredible marled effect, as though holding two strands of yarn together. All of this combined gives the yarn a beautiful depth and gorgeous drape.
We chose the name Garland for the yarn and as the jumping off point for the first collection of 14 free patterns. Evoking images of celebration, decoration, and beauty, the concept of a garland serves as a symbolic thread that ties together each piece in the collection.
Here's everything you need to know about the launch of Garland!
What was the process of making a yarn like?
We worked with Hobbii from start to finish on the development of the yarn, starting with making a wish list of what we wanted as well as a mood board for the palette, name, logo, and overall vibe. We knew we wanted a blend (perhaps a cotton/animal fibre mix) and that we wanted the option of marled colours. Hobbii came back to us with samples of a yarn from their mill in Italy and it was love at first sight! The blend of cotton and alpaca meant that only the alpaca would take the dye, giving the yarn the subtly marled effect we were after.
With the fibre decided, we moved on to the palette. We created a mood board of images (of paintings, interiors, and textiles) that featured colours we loved. From there we were able to pull shades from the Pantone formula guide for textiles to make a long list of our dream colours. We narrowed it down a bit, passed these shade references on to Hobbii who were able to have samples made of each colour. From there we narrowed things down even more to the 31 shades we settled on for the final palette.
The next step was to finalise the name, logo, and labels for the yarn. Lydia drew the garland illustration that features on the label - a throwback to when she drew the schematics in our magazine!
What kind of yarn is it?
Garland is a gorgeous blend of 70% Cotton, 30% Alpaca with 105m / 114yd per 50 g ball, made in Italy. It's a heavy DK/light worsted weight yarn that is perfect for accessories and garments. The yarn is constructed by blowing the alpaca into a cotton tube (like an i-cord) so both fibres show and the alpaca creates a fluffy halo. It's pretty glorious in both smooth stockinette and in textured stitches. The two-tones that appear in the yarn (the white from the cotton and the dyed alpaca) adds extra depth to textured stitches especially.
Are there patterns?
Oh yes. Fourteen free knit and crochet patterns will be released on launch day! We are sharing previews of these patterns on our newsletter and Instagram on the days leading up to our launch on 2 September.
How many colours are there?
We carefully curated 31 beautifully marled colours into our dream palette. We expect some colours will sell out faster than others, so you may want to make a list of your favourites now!
Where and when can I get it?
Garland drops on 2 September on hobbii.com! Sign up to the launch page to make sure you don't miss the launch day. Some colours may sell out quickly, so you will want to be sure you have all the info so you don't miss out on your favourites!
Will it be available at local yarn shops?
We and the team at Hobbii tried really hard to make wholesaling to shops happen in time for the launch, but the logistics just did not fall into place in time. Including shops was really high on our list of goals for this, and we have hopes that it could still happen in the future! Right now, Hobbii is trialling this in their home country, Denmark, and fingers crossed it can happen elsewhere soon!
I need help planning a project!
We looooove to help with colour choices! Feel free to comment on this post, on Instagram, or send us an email with your colour questions and we'd be happy to help! We love this palette and have done a lot of experimenting with combining shades or choosing the one for particular projects. Please just ask!
Also! Hobbii makes it super easy to order the right amount of yarn for each pattern in your size. If you find a pattern you love from the collection, scroll down, choose your size, and it automatically tells you how many balls you need for the project. You can change up the colour and even add the suggested needles to your cart!
What's next?
Make sure you're signed up to our launch landing page to be in with a chance to win the full palette of 31 colours! Once you're signed up, you'll also be one of the first to get a link to the yarn when it's live!
We hope you love this yarn as much as we've loved putting it and this collection of patterns together for you!
