Episode 22 - With Veera Välimäki
Hello Pomcats!
Today is a leap day - 29th February! There is something very fun about a date that only happens once every four years. And we are here to make it even more fun with our latest episode of Pomcast! This month we recorded live from unravel 2016, and interviewed Veera Välimäki, designer extraordinaire, and one of the authors of the Interpretations series, now available in print thanks to Pom Pom Press! So listen away now to get the lowdown on our time at unravel, and all the usual knit chat nonsense.
Make sure to download the Soundcloud app if you want to listen on a mobile device, or if you subscribe to Pomcast on iTunes it should appear on your device now! And while you’re having a listen, why not rate us or even leave a little review – thanks!
We also have a Pomcast give away for you. You could be the proud owner of these skeins of Shalimar. To be in with a chance of winning just comment on this post by Sunday 6th March telling us which of the Interpretations patterns you are most excited to knit. Extra points if you tweet, share on Facebook or Instragram! Just let us know that you did in a separate comment.
And of course a big thank you to our sponsors for this episode - Shalimar Yarns! Shalimar create beautiful hand-dyed yarn in their unique and identifiable colour palette, always using custom-milled, exceptional bases (as you can see from the picture above!).
Tip Top Top Tips
For this episode we took a more philosophical look at motivation as the late winter blues are starting to hit, and Sophie has been struggling with staying motivated. Do you have any tips you can share?
Tell + Tell
Lydia has finished her Turnberry, and was very pleased to be able to show it off at unravel and in the photo below. What better place to wear a new knit than a room full of crafty folks? Also fresh off the needles is a lovely Queensland Beach headband in the sadly discontinued MadelineTosh Dream Alpaca.
Sophie is still working on her ethereal Garland, and is also making a pair of Bergson socks to keep the yarn contrast high.
News
Well of course our main news is the publication of the Interpretations series (yippee!), but we also wanted to add that we will be at Edinburgh Yarn Festival next month, and we are hoping to make it to the Podcaster Lounge! More on that closer to the time.
Reviews
We had a closer look at Interpretations Volume 3... Lydia's faves were Breathing Space and Timeless Henley. Sophie chose the Peeping Cowl and Heartfelt Cardigan.
Interview
Recorded live at unravel in front of an audience! We asked Veera Välimäki about how she started knitting, language, travel, and of course which animal she would be and why.
Knitters You Should Know About
This episode we have chosen Barbara Walker, who it turns out is quite the renaissance woman. Not only did she compile the Treasuries of stitch patterns, but she even has her own tarot deck complete with paintings she created herself. Knitter, feminist, writer, scholar, Barbara Walker is worth finding out about.
The Barbara Walker Treasury project can be found (and added to) here.

P.S. Thanks again to Pomcast listener Alison who brought us chocolate mini eggs at unravel. You are truly a Pomcast hero!
