Roots + Branches
Issue 38: Autumn 2021
The magic of trees is that they simultaneously reach skyward and stay grounded. Between those two extremes, there’s a whole universe of life and, as the leaves begin to fall, that world becomes more and more apparent. We find ourselves fascinated with the life we see on and around roots and branches; mosses and lichens, fungi, ivy, and all manner of smaller plantlife are part of a tree’s ecosystem, while roots weave themselves into and around their environment to gather the nutrients the tree needs.
Roots and branches offer endless inspiration for knitwear: roots can become cables; branches, colourwork; lichen, a textural stitch pattern. Roots and branches echo symmetrically, with surprising little deviations. Zooming in on bark, or on the soil around roots, we are welcomed into a world of repeating patterns and unexpected colour pops.
This issue will be enveloped in a palette of moody blues, darker greys and browns, and desaturated shades - think of trees seen through the mist. But we are also looking for bright colours shining through the mist, like chartreuse and the patinated minty green of some lichens, the high contrast of branches against sky, and all manner of mushroom and mossy shades. As this is an Autumn Issue, we will be looking for transitional pieces to take us from warmer to cooler days, as well as accessories for crunchy walks among fallen leaves.
