Issue 39: Winter 2021
For this Winter, we want to explore rhythm in knitting and crochet. We have always marvelled at the way knitting and crochet charts not only look like musical scores but behave like them, too! They are sets of instructions but the craftsperson adds their own flair, just as a musician does. Music, like craft, can be a deeply personal experience but also frequently a communal one. Just as musicians create in groups, sharing songs and tunes, so do crafters share techniques and motifs. From steady marches to syncopated phrases, or from quick tempos to gently lilting waltzes, we think the scope for interpretation is as endless as a drum loop.
We encourage you to jump in even if you aren’t familiar with musical terminology! Perhaps listen to a favourite song or piece of music while you start your design, or think about rhythmic sounds that make you feel at home, such as natural rhythms like the sea or birdsong. We also encourage a less literal interpretation of rhythm and repeating cycles of all kinds can be a jumping off point for this issue.
This is a winter issue, so remember that we will be looking for clothing and accessories appropriate for colder weather. Warm sweaters and cardigans, snuggly hats and scarves and, of course, socks, mitts, and anything else that will keep you protected from the cold! Music, like craft, can be a great connector and healer. We hope you feel drawn to bringing sounds to life with your knits.
Please submit your ideas by Monday 5th April, midnight BST, via the form below. If your design has been selected, you will be notified by mid-April 2021. Finished patterns, samples, and articles will then be due in mid-July 2021 for publication in November 2021.

Compensation is offered on a scale of difficulty of the pattern/length of article, etc. We provide yarn support. You can also rest assured your pattern will be presented in the best light possible, with professional tech editing, beautiful photography, and brilliant graphic design.
