When is a scarf not a scarf? When it's a cowl!
This autumn Pom Pom has had the pleasure of having Fiona Alice as our resident knitter and intern. Fiona recently came to London from Nova Scotia, Canada, a place which also has lots of rain - she assures us that the weather here won't get her down! Also knitted stuff works well in crappy climates right? She is now an all round Pom Pom hero, helping us out at Pom Pom HQ with blogging, knitting, photo shoots and events. She is quite the handy lady!
You might recognise Fiona's name and work from Pom Pom Issues 7 & 10. Her latest pattern, Selsey, is a wild garden of stranded colour. We love the giant scarf version - so satisfying to bundle yourself up in layers of glowing colourwork.
But we know that knitting a whole colourwork scarf can be daunting, and so we are so excited that today Fiona is sharing an alternate version of her scarf with us on the blog! We feel very lucky indeed! Let us introduce you to Mini Selsey, the infinity scarf version. It’s shorter in length, yet just as cosy and will take half the amount of time to knit up.
We had fun selecting another delightful colour combination from Quince & Co’s range of Chickadee. This time we’ve blended Belize, Peaks Ferry, Honey, Petal and Malbec to create a refreshing and still cheerful palette to brighten up your winter.

Selsey / Infinity Version / Fiona Alice
Sizing & Measurements: One Size: Length before seaming: 140 cm / 55” Circumference: 34 cm / 131⁄2”
Yarn: Quince & Co Chickadee (Sportweight; 100% American wool; 166 m / 181 yds per 50 g) Shades: A: Belize x 3 skeins,
1 skein of each of the following: B: Honey, C: Malbec, D: Peaks Ferry, E: Storm, F: Petal
Gauge: 24 sts & 20.5 rows = 10 cm / 4” in stranded colour pattern on 5.5 mm needles after blocking
Needles: 5.5 mm / US 9 – 16” circular needles, 40cm / 16” length
Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.
Notions: Stitch marker, scrap yarn, tapestry needle, spare circular needle similar in size
Notes: This version of Selsey is knit in one piece and then grafted together for a seamless finish. The first half is worked in various colours from the Main Chart. The second half is sections of the Secondary Chart. Please refer to Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 10 - Autumn 2014 (p. 53) for charts.
PATTERN BEGINS
SET-UP
Using scrap yarn, cast on 80 sts. Join in the round being careful not to twist. PM to indicate beginning of round.
MAIN CHART REPEATS
Next round: Being with Rnd 3-43 of Colourway A.
Complete Colourways B, C then D.
SECONDARY CHART REPEATS
Next, complete Secondary Chart, Colourway A.
Follow with Rnds 1-26 of Colourway B.
Rnds 1-26 of Colourway D.
Complete Colourway C.
Rnds 1-21 of Colourway A.
EMBELLISHMENT
Using leftover yarn and tapestry needle, surface embroider Chain Stitch (see Pom Pom issue 4 for tutorial) in the Main Chart sections without pattern, using the schematic and photographs for guidance and placing colours to complement the stranded pattern either side.
FINISHING
Slip held sts back to the other needle on the circular set and holding the sts parallel to one another, using A graft the sts together using Kitchener Stitch. Weave in ends. Soak scarf and block to measurements leaving to dry thoroughly.
